New study shows importance of Hispanics in redefining the U.S. Catholic experience

"We are witnessing the birth of a new way of being parish"

HUNTINGTON, Indiana – The May 18th issue of OSV Newsweekly offers a succinct, practical overview of the just-released, groundbreaking study on the state of Catholic Hispanics in the United States. The three-year study entitled “National Study of Catholic Parishes with Hispanic Ministry” was led by Hosffman Ospino, Boston College School of Theology and Ministry Assistant Professor and National Catechetical Advisor for the Curriculum division of Our Sunday Visitor Publishing. The comprehensive national study was funded in part by the Our Sunday Visitor Institute.

Ospino’s feature article from the “In Focus” supplement in OSV Newsweekly outlines the present realities, future challenges, and relevant questions every parish community should be asking.

“Parishes must engage in serious discernment with all their members, Hispanic and non-Hispanic, about building communities where all members find themselves at home,” wrote Ospino in the article. “Besides families, parishes are the most readily available resources for the vast majority of Hispanic Catholics children and youth not enrolled in Catholic schools to formally learn their faith tradition.”

Our Sunday Visitor Publishing supports the Hispanic and bi-lingual catechetical market with textbook series such as Un Llamado a la fe and the brand new for 2015 Vivos en Cristo, as well as Early Childhood, Marriage Preparation and other sacramental preparation series and resources, family resources and adult education support materials.

Copies of the full report can be found at Boston College School of Theology and Ministry website.

Copies of the “In Focus” section are available to order for parishioners and ministry leaders to provide fresh insights into their Hispanic ministries, as parishes nationwide seek to redefine and enhance the parish experience for all. The text can also be found on OSV.com.
